At EdTechPosium in 2017, Katie and Rebecca spoke to the potential of Twitter for use by professionals and academics working in the educational technology space in their popular ‘Twitter Masterclass’. In this year’s workshop ‘Teaching with Twitter: The Revenge’, Katie and Rebecca will be exploring some practical strategies and considerations when deploying Twitter for teaching and learning in the higher education context.
Twitter is an open micro-blogging platform, which allows its users to write posts known as tweets, amass followers (and follow relevant accounts), ‘like’ content, and follow and contribute to hashtags. The egalitarian nature of Twitter as a platform affords many opportunities for teaching and learning. Twitter can provide a platform for learners to be able to concisely express their ideas, engage critically with concepts, and empower students to actively engage with both learners from within their learning cohort, experts working in their field, and the broader community.

In this interactive 50 minute workshop, participants will:
  • engage (or re-engage) with basic Twitter terminology and use
  • get the opportunity to discuss when and how Twitter is best deployed in the higher education space
  • have an understanding of the pedagogy that underpins the use of Twitter in teaching
  • be introduced to some case studies/examples of good practice
  • think through some of the technical and institutional limitations for engaging with technologies outside of the learning management system (navigating the policy space)
  • design some activities for scaffolding the use of Twitter throughout a unit
  • navigating the inherent pitfalls of open social media platforms (there are trolls under the bridge!)
  • think through the workload implications of using social media as a teaching strategy in an increasingly casualised sector.
By the end of this workshop, participants will:
  • have an understanding of the pedagogy that underpins the use of Twitter in teaching
  • develop strategies for implementing Twitter in teaching
  • create a learning design template for implementing Twitter in a course
